The Archaeological Museum of Camaiore, situated in Piazza Francigena, has been restructured, functionally upgraded and set up (PAR FAS founds 2007-2013, “interventions for the protection, enhancement and promotion of the cultural heritage”) over these latest years, in order to give the right value to the big amount of archaeological and historical witnesses that show the continuing inhabitance of this territory from Prehistory, throughout all the Medieval Age until the Proto-industrial age.
This approach to set the museum up guides the visitor not only in a methodological way, but encourages him to place the local history inside the wide frame of European-Mediterrean History and development. New ways of learning have also been created:
-touching stationings, where people can actually touch archaeological reproductions, can help to give a more direct approach to History;
-sperimental stationings, where people can experiment some techniques used by men during History, help getting involved visitors in a very active way.
-archaeological video clips, animations in some structures and touch screen stationings to deepen the knowledge on certain themes.
The meuseum is in Tori Massoni Palace. It is placed on the underground floor and raised ground floor and organised in 13 rooms.
Thanks to the excavations made on the underground floor in 2009, researchers have found the ruins from three different medieval residences. This witnesses can still be seen by a portion of a restored wall and by the finds found in the meuseum halls dedicated to the Medieval Age and Renaissance.
