Where: Camaiore – town of Montebello

When: 1192 - 1223

The castle of Montebello is mentioned for the first time in 1192 as a possession of the lords of Vallecchia; later it passed in co-ownership with the nobles of Corvaia in 1219, as well as the castle of Greppolungo.The ruins are visible from the path that connects Greppolungo with La Culla.

Inside the walls of the castle there were the houses. Among the few still recognizable there are the remains of an internal wall, carved in the rock, where the holes for the trusses testify to the existence of at least one floor on the ground floor. Near the ruins of the dwellings, two millstones for cereal of the kind typical of the Versilia area are still visible.

There was probably a quarterdeck (a fortified structure usually built in the highest part of the castle), while at 463 m there was undoubtedly a tower, of which the ruins of the base remain.

Like the other castles in the area owned by pro-Pisan families, Montebello is conquered around the year 1223 by the army of the Municipality of Lucca.
